Pearl Tan on crowdfunding for a feature film
Independent film company Pearly Productions got realistic with their rewards for their crowdfunding campaign.
Pearl Tan is the director of Pearly Productions, creating independent films focused on diversity.
Her latest venture is feature film The Casting Game, which highlights the journeys of a group of unconventional actors trying to make it big, an Asian-Australian family trying to make a visiting relative feel at home with Vegemite and meat pies, and a seemingly ill-fated love.
Pearl ran an online crowdfunding campaign to raise $5000 for post-production for the film. Her strategy included plenty of prep-time pre-campaign, and taking advantage of an already solid social media following and goodwill to give the campaign momentum in its early days.
The campaign raising $5,450 from 78 donors, and received another $4,550 from a philanthropist. With our matched funding of $10,000, Pearl is now well on her way to completing post-production, with a premiere scheduled for September 2017.
“After participating in Match LAB we achieved our target quite easily alongside a further $5,000 in philanthropy from a private donor. We knew that the amount we were targeting was reasonable as Match LAB allowed us to identify our reach and give us confidence in our art as a ‘product’,” Pearl said.
“Match LAB also gave us the confidence to not overreach with our rewards. We made them all digital products which are achievable to deliver and not too time consuming.”
