Artsource on the success of Board-led campaigns
Artsource is a membership body for visual artists in Western Australia, with a focus on engaging and supporting members through practical, affordable and relevant services.
We spoke to them about fundraising tactics and organisational sustainability.
Tell us about your Plus1 fundraising strategy.
We reached our $30,000 target through events, crowd funding and, crucially, by approaching individual philanthropists directly. Our Chair, Board and CEO led the campaign, which contributed significantly to our success.
The prospect of having donations doubled through Plus1 was a very important part of the message, enhancing the incentive and underlining the urgency.
Describe your project and the outcomes you hope to achieve.
Our capacity building project is in two parts. First, we have employed a dedicated Business Development Officer to build and maintain relationships with sponsors, patrons and donors. Second we are implementing a proven CRM system to ensure professional long-term supporter care.
We are aiming to increase our private sector income, to support both expansion of ongoing operations and a number of vital new strategic initiatives.
Plus1 has helped us develop our capacity to fundraise and diversify of income streams. We now have the right resources to give us the best possible chance of success.
How does your project address challenges or needs within your organisation?
Fundraising and supporter care takes time, focus and skill. Not having a dedicated Business Development Officer, nor a modern CRM system, made it difficult for us to raise the money needed to deliver more services to the artists we support.
Our Plus1 project has addressed this directly and we are already starting to reap the benefits.
What are the benefits of Plus1 to your organisation?
The main benefit is that we now engage fully with existing and potential sponsors and supporters. Relationships are being built and nurtured through personal meetings and a series of events. We have also secured two substantial sponsorships and a number of smaller ones. Our circle of Patrons (regular givers) is growing.
Have you increased your knowledge and skills in fundraising and partnerships as a result of Plus1?
For us it was not so much about increasing knowledge and skills. We knew what needed to be done and how to do it, but we simply did not have sufficient resources to focus, develop and nurture relationships properly and fully.
Will Plus1 leave a positive legacy in your organisation?
Yes, absolutely. Not only did Plus1 help us to raise sufficient money to start building our fundraising capacity, it also attracted a number of new supporters whom have pledged to continue supporting Artsource.
